FAST MACROBLOCK INTER MODE DECISION AND MOTION ESTIMATION FOR H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (MP-P1)

Abstract : In H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, MacroBlock (MB) mode decision and motion estimation (ME) is one of the most computationally expensive processes. This paper proposes a fast inter-mode decision and ME algorithm. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm could achieve similar Rate-Distortion (R-D) performance with about 1/2 computation saving, compared to the JM low-complexity mode with a fast Full Search (FS) Motion Estimation algorithm.
