Abstract : Color structure descriptor (CSD) defined in MPEG-7 is an important tool for image indexing and retrieval. It uses space distribution of colors to enhance its recognition ability. A hardware acceleration is a must for 4.5 GIPS computation complexity in realtime application. By observing the data dependency in original algorithm, we propose an efficient partial data reuse to update the histogram instead of recalculating it in the whole window, which can significantly reduce the working frequency from 4.5GHz in general purpose processors to 60 MHz in our accelerator. The memory bandwidth is also decreased from 6.2 GBytes to 60 MBytes. Finally, we proposed the first architecture of CSD generator for realtime video application which has properties of small gate counts and realtime description generation.
