Techincal Chair Introduction

Dear Delegates,

The 13th IEEE Workshop on Statistical Signal Processing is a forum for scientists and engineers to discuss their most recent findings within the area. The presentations range from purely theoretical development of methods and analysis, to its application in diverse fields such as radio astronomy, biomedical signal processing, sensor networks and wireless communication systems.

The workshop therefore offers an excellent opportunity for you to network and keep up with your counterparts from all over the world. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to such a prestigious event.

The response to the call for papers was tremendous, with over 400 submitted papers, including 38 invited papers to special sessions. All submissions were assigned to two members of the technical committee and/or other distinguished members of the statistical signal processing community for review. Based on the reviewer's scores, a total of 240 papers were selected for presentation at the workshop. I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to the reviewers for their tremendous effort and timely responses. The quality of the technical program is highly dependent on their work.

Besides the regular program, we have 6 plenary speakers and 7 special sessions, consisting mostly of invited papers. I wish to thank the organizers of these sessions for putting much effort into securing the high quality of the plenaries and special sessions.

A novelty in SSP 2005 is the student paper award. Based on the reviews, we have selected 10 contributions with a Ph.D. or M.Sc. student as first author. A special jury will select one of these to receive a best workshop contribution prize. The jury will take into account both the proceedings paper and the poster presentation.

Many people have worked hard for making this workshop a memorable event. I would like to thank everyone for their tireless work, and especially Dr. Dominique Asselineau for his endless support regarding the electronic review system. Lastly, but not least, I would like to thank the authors. You are the ones who are ultimately creating the technical program.

I am confident that you will find the technical program interesting and inspiring. Besides the technical work, I also hope you will be able to get some time off, for example to enjoy the local food and wine in Bordeaux. I certainly will!
