Laurea in Electronic Engineering at the MIT (Milan Institute of Technology) - Politecnico di Milano (1970, cum laude). Laurea in Mathematics at the SUM (State University of Milan) (1978, cum laude). With the only exception of the army service and the periods of study in foreign Universities, his research and lecturing activity took place at the Politecnico di Milano, where he is based in the Department of Electronics and Information.
His research interests are: Data analysis for model building; Kalman filtering techniques; predictive and adaptive control, periodic control, modelling and control in energy generation systems; vehicle control; modelling and control for life science problems, history of science. His contributions published on refereed international Journals count more than 120 papers. He is author or editor of twenty books.
Sergio Bittanti has contributed to the life of various Scientific Associations, among which IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers), IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) and EUCA (European Union Control Association).
He is IEEE Fellow (since 2001) and IFAC Fellow (since 2008).
From 2003, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of European Journal of Control, the Journal published on behalf of EUCA (European Union Control Association). He served as Chairman the 18th IFAC World Congress held in Milano in the summer of 2011. IFAC World Congress is considered the top congress in the science and technology of control. It is held triennially, the first one in Moscow in 1960 and the last one in Seoul in 2008. He played a main role in the designation of Italy as location for this Congress.
