Identification and control: the two inseparable friends cooperating for the solution of automation problems over more than five decades

Many are the cornerstone papers presented at the first IFAC World Congress in Moscow, 1960. Among them we would like to mention the paper entitled On the General Theory of Control Systems, by R. E. Kalman, and the paper entitled The Parameter Identification Problem by J. Westcott (one of the signers of the IFAC resolution of 1956).

These contributions are the champions of two parallel tracks of research in general field of automatic control, most often crossing and stimulating each other, always collaborating to the success of automatic control problems posed by industry and society.

In this lecture we will try to describe the evolution of this fruitful and friendly interaction over more than five decades, especially from the identification side.
