Abstract : This paper proposes a novel scheme of multiple description video coding approach using slice group coding tool proposed in H.264. Independent motion compensation loops are maintained for two descriptions in the encoder. One slice group composes one description, in which the other slice group is encoded very coarsely, as redundancy, to keep basic information. This coarse slice group is encoded using normal encoding or using motion vectors predicted by the main slice group, according to mode decision. Results show that our scheme keeps quality very good for middle and higher bitrate. Redundancy and side quality can be controlled by changing parameters of coarsely coded slice group, unlike some other MDC methods with fixed redundancy. Also it has no restriction on reference frame, which maximizes the efficiency of H.264, compared to the temporal methods. Some future works to better support low bitrate and high motion are also discussed.
