Network objectives and results
The goal of the CLUSTER Computational Intelligence and Learning is to achieve scientific, technical and "social" integration of four communities that perform research, development and application: Erudit (Fuzzy Logic), EvoNet (Evolutionary Computing), MLNet (Machine learning) and NEuroNet (Neural networks).

Actions of the CLUSTER
Computational Intelligence and Learning will be aimed at educating networks about the concepts and techniques of other networks, comparing techniques and theory, searching for possibilities to improve access by industry to a wider range of methods and tools than is provided in the context of a single network and to integrate techniques from different fields into new techniques.

ERUDIT is the Network of Excellence for Fuzzy Logic and Untertainty Modeling in Information Technology supported by the European Commission, DGIII Industry - Esprit Programme. The Network's aims are to put European 'industry' at the leading edge of international competitiveness in this area of information Technology.

ERUDIT was established in January 1995 for a period of three years. Because of its success a new contract was signed with the European Commission for another two years starting April 1998. At the moment the Network consists of almost 300 Nodes from industry, university, and research labs. The Network initialises and supports focused technology transfer activities between Nodes and from Nodes to new potential areas.

The promotion of stronger interaction between research and industry is a principal aim. During EUFIT you will have the chance to get to know the work of the committees and to meet the ERUDIT Members. For more information on the workshops and meetings please visit our stand!

Products
MATLAB, Simulink, Stateflow, Real-Time Workshop, Neural Network Toolbox, Fuzzy Logic Toolbox

Product Description
MATLAB constitutes the technical computing environment for engineers, scientists and researchers in all areas of industry and education. On nearly any hardware platform available today it provides users with state-of-the-art advanced functionality and technology in computation, visualization, simulation and utomatic code generation. Beyond this, MATLAB may be extended by application specific add-ons, so-called Toolboxes (e.g. Neural Networks Toolbox, Fuzzy Toolbox see below).

Simulink provides a blockdiagram oriented environment for graphical modeling and simulation of arbitrarily nonlinear dynamic systems.

Stateflow allows to model and simulate the behavior of complex reactive, event-driven systems based on finite state machine theory.

Real-Time Workshop complements Simulink and Stateflow by providing automatic C code generation directly from Simulink models. Different targets are possible. Examples are environments with signal processors, VME bus systems, PCs and microcontrollers.

The Neural Network Toolbox is a comprehensive environment for neural network research, design, and simulation within MATLAB. Neural networks offer engineers and scientists a powerful way to explore, classify, and identify patterns in data. Because they require intensive matrix computations, MATLAB provides a natural framework for rapidly implementing neural networks and for studying their behavior and application. The Neural Network Toolbox provides comprehensive support for the design, implementation, and simulation of many proven network paradigms and is completely extensible and customizable. Its consistent methodology and modular organization facilitate research, provide a flexible framework for experimentation, and simplify customization.

Fuzzy Logic Toolbox features a simple point-and-click interface that guides you effortlessly through the steps of fuzzy design, from setup to diagnosis.

Products
Intelligent Microsystems:
CID - Computational Intelligence Designer
Intelligent Microsystem for Machine Vibration Monitoring
Gas Sensor Microsystem

Product Description
CID - Computational Intelligence Designer: CID is a program for the simulation of the information flow in intelligent sensor microsystems. This includes signal processing, feature extraction and classification. Main objective is the optimization of the information flow from the output of the AD-converter to the output from the classification algorithm.

Intelligent Microsystem for Machine Vibration Monitoring: With some of the most advanced microsystem and microelectronic technologies we have developed a microsystem for machine vibration monitoring. In a small volume (3cm length, 1.5cm diameter) we have integrated a DSP with 100 MIPS of computing power, 1MByte EEPROM, 512KByte SRAM, a A/D converter, a vibration sensor and a field bus interface. This computing power and memory space gives us the possibility to use advanced signal processing and softcomputing methods for online vibration monitoring and trend analysis of machine failures. Over the field bus interface the microsystem communicates with a host in a production control center or in the internet.

Gas Sensor Microsystem: On the basis of Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) filters we are developing a microsystem for environmental gas sensing applications. As sensitive materials we are using ultrathin organic films. The electronic control of the SAW filters and the low level signal processing is realized in a ASIC. For the classification task we are using self-organizing neural networks and fuzzy algorithms implemented on a microcontroller.
